In partnership with the Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-cdt), Soul City Institute is proud to lead the Karabelo GBV Response Programme in mining communities in Thabazimbi Local Municipality, Limpopo and John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, Northern Cape. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17, which highlights the importance of local partnerships in addressing pressing social issues like gender-based violence (GBV). Our mission is to create safer and more equitable communities, ensuring protection and empowerment for women, children and other vulnerable groups.
Soul City Institute is dedicated to changing harmful social norms through innovative communication strategies, community mobilisation and education. By engaging men and boys alongside women, the programme fosters a culture of zero tolerance towards violence and challenges deeply ingrained gender stereotypes.
We also advocate for the integration of comprehensive sexuality education in schools, equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to build healthy relationships. Public workshops, media campaigns and community dialogues further challenge harmful beliefs and promote gender equity.
Through working with local community-based organisations in the two provinces, SCI enhances local support systems by ensuring survivors have access to health, legal and psychosocial services. Soul City Institute is strengthening its efforts to eliminate GBV and drive lasting social change. The Karabelo GBV Response Programme is a crucial step in ensuring that.
