Soul City Institute Embarks on New Journey
Over twenty years after it’s founding, one of South Africa’s foremost social justice communications organisations, the Soul City Institute, has shifted their focus to zone in on social justice for young women and girls and the communities in which they live.
The Department of Health has initiated the Girls and Young Women Campaign, to empower girls and young women. The campaign is informed by a report that suggests a disproportionate burden of HIV among adolescent girls and young women, between ages 15-24 years, in South Africa.

Golden Ladies Rise Young Women's Club is one of our clubs based in Mahikeng: Montshioa; North West. The club will be having a march for HUMAN RIGHTS DAY on Saturday, 19 March 2016 focusing on RACISM and LESBIAN GAY BISEXUAL TRANSGENDER AND INTERSEX (LGBTI).
What is the truth about virginity testing
Every year thousands of young women around South Africa are tested to find out if they are a virgin – someone who has not had sex. Some respect this as a cultural practice, others find it degrading. Rise visited a Club in KwaZulu-Natal in 2014 and spoke to some of the women involved. We also asked two young women, Nomalanga and Amanda, about their experiences.
The Ngcobo-Zintombizodwa (Girls Only) Rise Young Women’s club from a rural District in the Eastern Cape has recorded a CD. The CD has a song dedicated to Rise Young Womens Clubs, their Club Coordinator, Pienaar Motabene and Soul City.
