We demand safe taxis for women
We were part Mandela Day event for the #ActionAgainstPoverty campaign that was hosted yesterday at Constitutional Hill. The majority of women in South Africa use taxis to travel to work, school and to access public institutions (hospitals, police stations etc).
They choose taxis because they remain the most affordable and accessible mode of transport. Yet women remain vulnerable to physical and sexual harassment/assault. The recent taxi rapes reported in Gauteng demonstrate the severity of this problem. Our discussion, with Rise Club members from Tshwane explored how the call for safe taxis for women will lead to #ActionAgainstPoverty, where women will be able to fulfill their social and economic needs.
