Soul City Institute hosts a feminist allyship workshop

Soul City Institute held a feminist allyship workshop recently at the Kopanong Hotel & Conference Centre, GP. The workshop was attended by 20 male staff members from the organization's provincial social mobilizers and head office staff. The provinces represented included Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. The workshop was facilitated by psychologist and artist Mthetho Tshemese (Village Shrink).

The purpose of the event, according to Mpho Mogapi, was "to have a debate, through a workshop, on how Soul City Institute's male personnel can become feminist allies."

The following items were on the agenda for the meeting: What exactly is feminism and masculinity? Mogapi predicted that in the coming years, there will be more discussion on how men can become feminist allies.

"As well as how to deal with the daily issues men face because of their upbringing in patriarchal societies and the response from communities," he added.

When asked, what he wanted the men to take away from the event," he responded that he wanted the men in attendance to be feminist allies and to continue to participate in other platforms with other men, as well as to discover methods to become feminist allies as a collective".

We felt it was important for us as an organization to hold this event, and we believe that men should engage in more continuous talks with one another, even if they are not in a workshop setting," said Mogapi. Mogapi observed that the participants were eager to learn and that they participated freely with a variety of themes throughout the session.
